Notes on this chapter

Much of this book is concerned with topics that have never been discussed in any concrete form before, so that between the main text and these notes I have been able to include a large fraction of everything that is known about them. But in this chapter (as well as some of the ones that follow) the systems I consider have often had huge amounts written about them before, making any kind of complete summary quite impossible.
