Testing the [texture perception] model
Although it is difficult to get good systematic data, the many examples I have tried indicate that the levels of discrimination between textures that we achieve with our visual system agree remarkably well with those suggested by my simple model. A practical issue that arises is that if one repeatedly tries experiments with the same set of textures, then after a while one learns to discriminate these particular textures better. Shifting successive rows or even just making an overall rotation seems, however, to avoid this effect.
