Cowries

In cowries the outside of the shell is covered by the mantle of the animal. The patterns on the shell typically involve spots, and are typical of those obtained from 2D cellular automata of the kind shown on page 428. The mantle is normally in two parts; the boundary between them shows up as a discontinuity in the shell pattern.
