Historical Ideas of Formal Uncertainty and NKS Irreducibility

Jason Cawley
Wolfram Research

This will be a talk about the history of ideas about limits to knowledge, placing NKS ideas on the subject in historical context, from ancient Greek and Enlightenment periods to Pierce and Popper. Different arguments have been advanced as to the scope and origin of such limits. NKS irreducibility preserves intuitions from some of them and revises others.
